When experiencing pelvic floor pain related to muscle tightness, the answer is frequently “Yes.” Vibration works by helping the nervous system shift from a state of guardedness to a state of relaxation. Vibration can:
- interrupt pain signals,
- decrease muscle spasticity, and
- soothe discomfort.
It can also help ease entry for penetration, by allowing the muscles to soften and relax.
Vibration increases blood flow, promotes lymphatic drainage, and can help reduce pain and anxiety. When used alongside pelvic floor therapy, vibration devices can improve muscle coordination and function. They can be used independently or with a partner, depending on comfort and preference.
When experiencing pelvic floor pain related to muscle tightness, devices such as the Kiwi or a vibrating pelvic wand can be helpful tools. These devices provide gentle, superficial or deep, vibration that support myofascial release of the pelvic floor muscles, which may help reduce pain and tension.
Tips for Getting Started:
- Start slowly: Begin with gentle pressure and slow movements to see how your body responds. You can even start by using the device over clothing if that feels more comfortable.
- Use lubrication: Apply plenty of lubricant to allow for smooth, comfortable movement. An oil-based lubricant may be ideal as oil tends to last longer without drying out.
- Listen to your body: Comfort and safety are the priority. Take your time and never rush the process. If you feel sharp pain or discomfort that is too intense, stop and reach out to a pelvic floor therapist for guidance.
