TMJ-TMD Therapy

At Solstice Physiotherapy, some of our physical therapists specialize in temporomandibular joint dysfunction. We treat a complex part of the body by integrating our knowledge of orthopedics, posture, and neurology to understand this entire system. Using an interdisciplinary approach, we focus on communicating with other specialists and providers to create an appropriate treatment plan and provide the best care to our patients. TMD/TMJ physical therapy can provide patients with relief from symptoms related to, but not limited to, posture issues, spine dysfunction, chronic pain, hypomobility or hypermobility, as well as other orthopedic issues.

Your Path to Less Pain

The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is the joint on either side of the head that connects the jawbone to the skull. Common causes of TMJ pain and dysfunction include jaw clenching, teeth grinding, arthritis, joint hypermobility, neck pain, and poor posture. TMJ dysfunction can be very painful, and symptoms may consist of clicking/ popping sounds when opening and closing the mouth, pain and difficulty chewing, jaw pain, and neck tension. Physical therapy can help by correcting postural dysfunctions, strengthening the neck, shoulders, and scapular stabilizers, and using manual therapy to address muscle tightness throughout the jaw and surrounding areas to decrease pain and improve function.

Our Licensed Physical Therapists

All of our therapists are licensed physical therapists in New York State. We have received additional certifications, which include either the WCS or the PRPC. The WCS is a women’s health physical therapy certification from the American Physical Therapy Association, which is achieved after 2000 hours of work in pelvic health/women’s health physical therapy, completion of a patient case study, as well as passing specialty examination. The PRPC is the pelvic rehabilitation practitioner certification from Herman and Wallace Institute of Pelvic Health, which is achieved after taking 4 levels of pelvic floor training, followed by passing a specialty examination. All of our therapists take continuing education classes, as well as engage in mentoring and teaching.

I have been fortunate enough to be a patient of Kara’s for almost a decade – having met with her after dealing with years of complex pain and appointments with countless doctors/physical therapists. I truly don’t know where I would be without her. More than anything else she truly wants the best for her patients and for them to feel like the person they were before pain. She is an amazing physical therapist but is also incredibly skilled at helping those in her care work through the impact that this type of pain has on their mental health (which often helps with the physical side of things). Every single time I leave the office (which happens to be a beautiful and calming space) I feel relief knowing that she is in my corner, that we have a plan to address how I’m feeling and that I am in the absolute best hands. I am her #1 fan and highly recommend her and any of her outstanding colleagues – we should all be so lucky to have a team of healthcare professionals like them.

“If I could give 10 stars I would. I’ve been to other practices and not any one of them can compare to Solstice. I started with one provider who wasn’t the best fit so Erica the Co Owner personally called me and assigned me to her case load. This level of service is so rare especially in healthcare. Erica treats me like family and I feel like I’m chatting with a friend during treatment as she makes me feel so comfortable, educated, and empowered but most importantly Erica has restored my faith after other practices were not good with me. She’s trauma informed, takes a holistic approach, is agile when working with me and is un rushed. Erica has went above and beyond with my care. I’m so blessed to have found solstice and Dr. Erica.

“I am not someone to write reviews all over the place just to write them, but if anyone here is looking for care with someone who cares and is attentive then please please go to Yvonne. I say this as someone who’s had a pretty long journey with the issue I came here for. I was seeing another therapist before Yvonne multiple times and the issue did not seem to be getting better. Yvonne knew exactly what the issue was and to be very honest at that point I was already feeling hopeless. I am also super lucky to be in her care because tbh I am not sure if I would be at this point if it weren’t for her. She kept it straightforward, very communicative, always professional and above all else you feel seen, heard, and genuinely cared for, so any one who is dealing with the issues that we seek this office for I would definitely recommend her. The office as a whole is very professional, communicative and friendly as far as front desk goes.  If you’re reading this thank you so much Yvonne I could cry right now looking back at how far I’ve made it.”
